Our inn sits on twelve beautiful acres on a horseshoe bend on the Pocomoke River - giving spectacular views in both directions. The Pocomoke River has been described as the most beautiful river on the eastern shore.
The property was originally patented on July 3, 1665, and has been used as farmland for its entire existence. Even today, corn and soybeans -the "jewels" of the Delmarva Peninsula - are planted each year in the front fields that flank the driveway. In addition, the owners, Russ and Denise Shaner plant and tend a smaller garden and what is harvested is used in the dishes served to the guests at the inn. The house is surrounded by mature trees including pecan, fig, apple and numerous berry bushes which are preserved and used in many recipes at the inn. The second largest Sycamore tree in the state of Maryland sits on the edge of the river just outside the back patio.
The inn is a farmhouse that was built in 1802. The original plat for the property was called "Friendship", later to be lengthened to "Friendship Farm". The house and the surrounding property have undergone a few transformations through the years. One being the addition of a smaller, tenant house to the main structure which occurred in the early 1900's - something of an engineering marvel for the time. With that addition, the house took on the appearance of a style popular on the eastern shore known as 'big house, little house'. As time passed and new ownership took over the farm, a garage (now serving as a prep area for caterers of special events), garden building/equipment shed and workshop were added to the property.
When the Shaner's purchased the property in 2002, a much needed updating began. Outside, new landscaping was added, the boat dock enlarged and updated which included electric and water as well as the completion of the river overlook. Inside, each room was given its own personality by being graced with a new coat of paint, wallpaper, specialized décor and/or antiques. However, to fulfill their dream of opening a bed and breakfast on this amazing property, it was determined that a major renovation was needed - which included modifications to the upstairs, it's guest rooms and then an addition of an owners' quarters on the first floor.
At last, in January 2007 Friendship Farm Bed and Breakfast was finally ready to show off its new life as an inn, and officially opened its doors to overnight guests and social events.
Come down to the river and relax -
we look forward to having you as our guests,
